The History of Ujiie Carp Store in Naruko, Miyagi Pref.

The king of river fish, the black carp
Even people in Stone Age Japan ate carp.

The carp dish has been said to be the best of all Japanese cuisine. In the Edo period, carp was only allowed to be served up to the Shogun.

We'd like to have future generations be aware of the long history and importance of the black carp.

My paternal grandfather, Sakae Ujiie, was a farmer in Shiwahime, Miyagi Pref, who bred and sold carp to the Tohoku region and Gunma Prefecture as a sideline.

He was said to be the first person who started and told other farmers how to raise carp with weeds in rice fields.

As well as spreading his own style of carp breeding, he had a pond and sold baby carps to other carp breeders. (He used to have a signboard advertising his business at Sendai Station.) But since other breeders had started to do all stages of carp breeding and raising by themselves, he forwarded less and less to them.

The store in Shiwahime is now kept by his grandson and his daughter.
My father is the second son of my grandfather. He comes from his hometown, Shiwahime, to Naruko and started working at a spa hotel. In 1961, he built a house at the present site in Higashi-Naruko. He also made a pond in his garden and started selling carp dishes to the hotels in Naruko.

Our store is small run only by the family. We have been faithful to the cooking styles of bygone years. We mainly sell arai (sashimi prepared in warm water) and umani (sweet simmered carp) carp. We have many customers not only in hotels but also in households who have remained faithful to our carp dishes.
